How much space and power does a photo booth need?

Short answer: plan for a space about 8 feet wide and 8 feet deep, with a standard household outlet within reach. The booth itself is about the size of a small table. The rest is standing room for a group and space for a backdrop behind them.

Self-serve photo booth with a white backdrop and prop station, set up at Lincoln Estates
Booth, backdrop and prop table at Lincoln Estates: about the footprint you need to plan for.

Floor space

  • The booth: roughly the footprint of a small table.
  • Standing room: enough for four to six people shoulder to shoulder in front of the camera.
  • Backdrop: about 8 feet wide behind the group, if your package includes one.
  • Prop table: a small side table for the prop bin, which the venue can usually supply.

Tight on space? The booth still works in a smaller corner. Groups will just be a little cozier.

Power

One standard outlet is enough for the camera, lights, screen and printer. If the nearest outlet is far away, tell us before the day so we can bring the right extension cord and tape it down safely.

The best spot in the room

  • Near the action, between the bar and the dance floor, not in a hallway.
  • Visible from the tables, so people see others having fun and join in.
  • Away from bright windows behind the group, which fight the booth's lighting.
  • Not blocking a fire exit or the path to the washrooms.

Placement is the single biggest factor in how much a booth gets used. More ideas in how to get guests to use the booth. Ask your venue to mark the spot with tape or a sign, then send us your date and venue.

Quick answers

Does a photo booth need its own circuit?

No. It runs on a normal household outlet. Just avoid sharing a circuit with heavy kitchen or DJ equipment if the venue can help it.

Can we move the booth during the event?

It is best to leave it in one place once it is set up and tested. Pick the spot with your venue before the day.
